Why Scramble? Well just about anyone can enjoy a street scramble if he or she can (a) can travel under their own power for 90 minutes, (b) can follow a street map, and (c) likes to explore.
When participants arrive at the Sagebrush Community Challenge/Scramble, they will receive a map with about 30 circled checkpoint locations just before the race begins. Each checkpoint, depending on distance and difficulty to reach, is assigned a certain number of points. The individual racer or team can quickly review the map and strategize about the best way to garner as many points as possible.
In a street scramble, there’s no cheating allowed! For race organizers to ensure that scramblers actually reach the checkpoint, a scorecard system is used. The scorecard has a description of a feature to be found at each checkpoint, such as “statue of woman” or “public fountain.” When scramblers arrive at a checkpoint location, they look for the feature described on the scorecard. They then answer a simple multiple-choice question, found on the scorecard, to prove they were there. For example: Statue of woman: What is the last word on the plaque next to the statue? (a) Arts (b) Commission (c) Space.
All this excitement and exploration takes place in 90-minutes! So teams or individuals must plan checkpoint visits accordingly in order to be back to the starting point on time. Points are lost for every late minute!
So brush up on those map-reading skills, gather up a fun team or enter on your own, and get ready to scramble. Get your mind and body moving – while raising money for important services in our area – with the Sagebrush Community Challenge/Scramble.
